It was nice getting back into the swing of things this week, though I don’t have much to report since two out of the three posts came from movies that I watched over a month ago. That being said, it was a bit of a fortuitous experiment. Having to think back over that period of time, without the help of my notebook (at least at first) provided an interesting perspective. Certain aspects of the films crystalized while others faded almost completely away. Perhaps, I’ll use this lesson on “classics revisited”. I’ve been meaning to go back and re-watch It Follows for some time now. I think when I finally get around to it (maybe next week) the first half of my write-up will be a reflection on the film before my re-watch and the second half will be my thoughts immediately after the re-write… anyway… I’m just brainstorming here… back to this week. Here’s a quick reminder of the movies I wrote up:
- They Look Like People (2015)
- V/H/S (2012)
- V/H/S/2 (2013)
I’ve said my peace about the V/H/S series, so I don’t really want to reiterate anything here. That being said, I think several of the segments are extremely strong entries into the horror genre, but the overall collection has some major weak points that are going to bump the installments down in my list. As for They Look Like People, I honestly cannot recommend this movie highly enough. Here are my “ratings”:
- Worth Seeking Out (i.e. Worth Paying For): They Look Like People
- Worth Watching via Free Streaming: V/H/S/2
- Worth Watching on an International Flight or While Doing Work: V/H/S
- Worth Avoiding and Doing Something Better with Your Time: V/H/S Viral
Again, when it comes to the V/H/S series I can’t really recommend any single installment. However, if you were to create the “mixtape” I suggested during my write-up of the second installment it would fall into the “Worth Seeking Out” category.
We’re almost back to a true top ten list. I have four movies to add to the mix (I realize I never got around to ranking V/H/S Viral). I’m excited for next week when I can start dropping movies from the list (I’m looking at you The Secrets of Emily Blair). What I’m not looking forward to is decided between the top three… which, needs to happen at the end of this sentence… seriously, I need to stop writing and just make a decision… like, right now… now… okay, now… really… and, here I go… now…:
- They Look Like People
- The Invitation
- Bone Tomahawk
- V/H/S/2
- The Windmill
- V/H/S
- V/H/S/Viral
- Bleed
- The Secrets of Emily Blair
They Look Like People made it to the top of the list and I switched around Bone Tomahawk and The Invitation. That being said, the distance between these three movies is extremely narrow, so don’t be surprised if they continue to be shuffled.
See you next week!
