After making it through my second week of the new format, I think I’ve come up with a way to keep myself sane. The week started on a high point… I then tested my luck by playing a round of Netflix Roulette… and in order to wash that taste out of my mouth, I took a deep-dive into Romero’s classic trilogy. I think I’ve come to the conclusio, that while Netflix Roulette will still play a part in this adventure, I’m going to take a bit more of an active role in that I will curate many of the movies I’m watching. Anywhere, here is a break-down of the movies I watched this week.
- Bone Tomahawk (2015)
- Dawn of the Dead (1978)
- Day of the Dead (1985)
- Night of the Living Dead (1968)
- The Secrets of Emily Blair (2016)
Last week, I think I said something about only rating those films that are new to me. After going back over the classic Romero trilogy, I’ve decided to scratch that idea. Really, I came to this decision after re-watching Day of the Dead. I realized that from as an objective a place as possible, it does not hold up as well as I wish. Therefore, I think it’s important to rate everything I watch. With that in mind, here are my thoughts after a relatively busy week of movie watching:
- Worth Seeking Out (i.e. Worth Paying For): Bone Tomahawk, Dawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead.
- Worth Watching via Free Streaming: Day of the Dead
- Worth Watching on an International Flight or While Doing Work: nothing here this week.
- Worth Avoiding and Doing Something Better with Your Time: The Secrets of Emily Blair
It pains me to bump Day of the Dead down a category. I truly do love that film… in the end though, I came to the conclusion if that you’re a horror fan but missed the Romero stuff, while this film has plenty to offer it is by no means a classic. Also, I just want to reiterate that Bone Tomahawk is an amazing movie… if you haven’t had a chance to see it yet, do it!
Finally, I’ve updated my top ten list (well, it’s really only a top five list after this week). I struggled with what to do with numbers 1 and 2… to me, these movies are equally great. Therefore, expect these movies to switch places as I’ve had more time to reflect on them (and depending on my mood the day I write the post). I’m still only going to put new (to me) movies here… if I didn’t it would just become a list of classic horror movies. Remember, though, this list is new… so, really, the fourth and fifth movies should just be avoided at all costs… give it a couple of weeks (i.e. once I actually watch over ten new movies) and they will disappear… never to be spoken about again
- The Invitation
- Bone Tomahawk
- The Windmill
- Bleed
- The Secrets of Emily Blair
See you next week!
